Members of the High Wycombe Society were among those invited to an official launch at Wycombe Museum of the Wycombe WWI trail app to which they contributed earlier in the year. The app can be found at wycombetrails.org – it’s designed to be used on smartphones while walking round the town, but you can also view it on a PC from the comfort of your armchair, and there is an option to print out a paper version of the trail. Star of the video clips, Liam Burton, a professional actor, guides participants round the town as it would have been viewed by a soldier during the Great War as World War I was then known. For participants who want to learn more, there are lots of links to background notes, website resources including images which can be studied at leisure.
Seen here in costume are our Hon Treasurer, Malcolm Connell, who plays the role of George Peace, a tailor who prospered from the demand for officers’ uniforms during the war – and member, Sally Scagell, who plays the role of a lady on the organising committee raising funds for the Red Cross. The project was a collaborative effort initiated by WDC involving staff and students at Bucks New University as well as volunteers and utilised some National Lottery Funding. HWS Chairman, Jackie Kay, contributed research notes and wrote much of the script used.
