2018 will be remembered for many reasons, not least for a number of significant national anniversaries including the centenary of the end of World War I and the centenary of the Representation of the People act which gave many women the vote for the first time. And at a very local level, we also celebrated the Golden Anniversary of the formation of the Society.
For logistical reasons our Society’s celebration was held in the Summer whereas the “real” anniversary passed by relatively quietly in November 2018.
An account of our celebration at Wycombe Abbey School was included in the Society’s Autumn newsletter, but space did not permit the inclusion of all the poems and other items on display, some of which can be seen here in this account of our Society’s first 50 years in music, art and verse.
Our Society’s timeline first created by Ann Simone to celebrate our first 40 years, was also updated to include the last 10 years of activities, within the Society, locally, nationally and internationally, and a souvenir leaflet including a detailed description of the heraldic decorations in ‘Big School’ was provided for those attending.
As the year draws to a close, we have published two more souvenir leaflets relating to the above-mentioned national anniversaries. These help interpret two local stained-glass windows: The World War I commemorative window which can be found on the old staircase within the Guildhall; and the Dove Window in All Saints’ church which remembers “the ministry of women … in all spheres of life”.
