The High Wycombe Society fully supports the recently launched Bucks Free Press campaign to save the Red Lion statue in the High Street and is asking its members and supporters, please, to sign the online petition to be found here. The distinctive feature of the lion on its portico in the High Street used to mark the location of the Red Lion Hotel formerly the Red Lion Inn, one of the earliest coaching inns. An earlier incarnation of the statue is housed in Wycombe Museum. The current statue is hollow and carved from over a hundred pieces of timber. If left in its current state without appropriate restoration and maintenance, it can be expected to deteriorate rapidly as water has been absorbed by the structure which will cause the wood to rot.
Pictured here is the lion as it was in 2013. The general damage was not as visibly apparent at this time as it is today. A short-term repair had just been carried out to its tail.
