At the Society meeting on 23rd March, we were delighted to note that Dame Frances Dove had been recognised on the official list of 100 Suffrage Pioneers compiled by the Women’s Local Government Society as part of the commemoration of the centenary of the Representation of the People Act which gave some women the vote.
Cllr Lesley Clarke spoke of her work as Chair of the WLGS getting the Suffrage Pioneers project off the ground; Society member, Willie Reid, outlined the career and achievements of Miss Dove whom the Society nominated for inclusion in the list; and James Mercer Kelly, Senior Deputy Head of Wycombe Abbey, spoke of Miss Dove’s legacy today which can be seen in the ongoing work of the school.
A fuller account of the meeting will be in the Society’s Summer Newsletter. In the meantime, however, the WLGS website includes cameos of many of the suffragists and suffragettes included in the list which can be viewed here and in particular, the profile of Miss Dove can be found here
